Stewart Walker works within our Vulnerable Customer Team and was instrumental in helping to establish the Tesco Bank Armed Forces Network.

Last week, members of Tesco and Tesco Bank’s Armed Forces Network came together to mark the re-signing of the Armed Forces Covenant and to celebrate the great work of our Armed Forces colleagues.

We caught up with Stewart to hear about his reflections on this event and to find out what being involved in the Armed Forces Network means to him.

“Leaving the forces and joining the civilian world of work was, to me, a daunting prospect. I had spent twelve years in the Navy as a radio operative, but sometimes I felt that potential employers didn’t really understand what I had done in the forces, or how my skill set was suitable for different roles.

I joined Tesco Bank in 2011 and from day one, they really recognised and valued the skills that I had developed through my military service and took time to understand how these could help both customers and colleagues.

I work within the Vulnerable Customer Team, helping customers who may be experiencing really difficult circumstances – whether it’s a cancer diagnosis or a mental health problem – we are there to help people and do what we can to support with their finances at the most challenging of times.

Undoubtedly my work within the Navy have made me who I am today – that time serving in the forces taught me so much including effective communication, and most importantly team work – skills which I bring to my role within Tesco Bank.

In 2016, I helped to establish the Tesco Bank Armed Forces Network and it has been such a pleasure to see the Network grow over the last couple of years. Last week, as part of the network, it was with great pride that I visited Tesco’s Head Office as they marked the re-signing of the Armed Forces Covenant.

Tesco was the first retailer in the UK to sign the Covenant and to me, this demonstrates the organisation’s ongoing commitment to make Tesco and Tesco Bank great places to work for reservists, veterans and military families, but also the continued support and understanding that they offer colleagues.

Attending the re-signing event was truly special, however the timing of it, in the lead up to Remembrance Day, made it feel even more significant.  Tesco and Tesco Bank have always marked Remembrance Day, giving colleagues the opportunity to pause and reflect, and by supporting the work of the British Legion with poppies and collection points in all stores, distribution centres and offices across the UK.

Working for an organisation that so openly and proudly supports the Armed Forces and the people connected to it is hugely important to me. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the Armed Forces Networks at both Tesco and Tesco Bank and look forward to watching their continued growth and development.”
