Former Kilmarnock manager Kenny Sheils opens new Robin House five-a-side pitch funded by Tesco Bank staff

TODAY (10th September 2013) former Kilmarnock FC Manager Kenny Shiels officially opened the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland’s (CHAS) brand new five-a-side football pitch at Robin House.

The pitch was funded by Tesco Bank’s Glasgow-based staff, who have raised more than £23,000  since March this year.  A team of volunteers from Tesco Bank also help to lay the pitch foundations.

The facility will provide important outside space for children and their families to play. It can also be used for garden parties and Remembering Weekends for bereaved families who return to Robin House to share their experiences and support others going through similarly difficult times.

Adele Mills, Community Investment Manager for Tesco Bank, said,

“At Tesco Bank we encourage all our staff to support their local communities. Over the last few years, we have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for worthy causes. We are all very proud of the staff in our Glasgow office and their fantastic efforts to support CHAS.”

Debbie Mooney, Regional Fundraising Manager for CHAS, added,

“Lots of the children and families who visit Robin House love football. This new pitch will be a very popular addition and a great way for families to relax and spend time together creating happy memories. A special thanks to Tesco Bank for funding the new pitch and to Kenny Shiels and the [Name] family for demonstrating how much fun can be had!”

Kenny Shiels, former Kilmarnock FC Manager, commented,

“I was delighted to be invited to come to Robin House to open the new five-a-side football pitch. Sometimes we look at football and talk about pressure, but when you see the incredible work that CHAS do to support families at these very hard times it’s very inspiring.”

Background on CHAS

  • Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) is a charity that provides the only hospice services in Scotland for children and young people with life-shortening conditions.
  • CHAS offers care in two children’s hospices, Rachel House in Kinross and Robin House in Balloch. The hospices support the whole family by offering short planned breaks, emergency support, end of life care and a range of bereavement services.
  • CHAS also provides a home care service, called CHAS at Home, staffed from both hospices and with dedicated teams based in Aberdeen and Inverness. The service offers care to families in their own homes when they need it most.
  • CHAS supports over 300 families, as well as a significant number of families who receive bereavement support. The services are funded mainly through the generosity of the many supporters who help raise £9 million needed each year to provide these vital hospice services.
