Practical Parents to cut back on Half Term spending
4 February 2013
Almost half (46 per cent) of British mums are on the hunt for free entertainment for their kids this half term, according to new research* from Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card.
The research suggests that in a further effort to keep costs under control during half-term, over half (55 per cent) of mums surveyed by Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card, plan to entertain their children with activities at home, such as baking, crafts and board games.
Nearly a third (29 per cent) of all parents are feeling the financial strain from Christmas and will spend less on entertaining their children this February half-term, compared to 2012. A third (35per cent) of parents said they will spend under £50 over half-term.
With the financial pressures from Christmas still fresh, nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of parents surveyed have decided to take time off work to look after their children during half-term and nearly a fifth (17 per cent) of those surveyed said that grandparents will be looking after them.
However, despite the financial hangover and willingness to entertain children for free, a surprisingly high number of parents surveyed (47 per cent) are missing a trick by not using points from loyalty cards to pay for fun activities. Interestingly, of those who plan to spend money on entertaining their children this half-term, nearly one-in-ten (nine per cent) intends to put the Christmas money they received towards it.
Will Curley, Credit Card Director at Tesco Bank commented,
“The date of the February half-term is slightly earlier this year and as a result many parents are still feeling the financial pinch from Christmas. However, parents don’t have to miss out on entertaining their children. Our Tesco Bank Clubcard Credit Card customers can put their Clubcard points towards days out, eating out and much more.”
