Tesco Bank recognised at Arts & Business Scotland national awards

Last night (30th October) Tesco Bank’s community programme was recognised at Arts & Business Scotland’s 2013 Awards in Aberdeen.

 Tesco Bank and The Reading Agency won the Arts in the Community category at a ceremony to celebrate successful partnerships between Scottish based businesses and arts organisations.

In all, Tesco Bank received nominations across four different categories: Community Award (both Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland and Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools), Young People and the Arts (Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools) and Cultural Branding (Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools).

Tesco Bank’s community investment manager Adele Mills received the Community Award with Peter Barker, director of business management at The Reading Agency.

The Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge, in partnership with registered charity The Reading Agency aims to engage at least 35,000 children in Scotland to read six books during the long holiday, when literacy standards traditionally dip. In 2012, the year to which the award relates, that number was 39,000.

Tesco Bank also supports a programme of activity in every participating local authority to put on events which highlight and promote the joy of reading for children and young people.

In judging the community category the awards panel noted down the excellent data gathered on the programme, referencing its growth over recent years. In 2010 around 25,000 children participated, before Tesco Bank’s involvement.

Adele Mills, Tesco Bank community investment manager, commented,

We don’t engage in these programmes for awards, however it is extremely pleasing to see the work of the many who genuinely make a difference recognised. Peter Barker, director of business management at The Reading Agency added,

“This is very much a three way partnership between The Reading Agency, Scotland’s libraries and Tesco Bank. Librarians have been brilliant in finding ways to get even more children in Scotland reading, and Tesco Bank’s commitment to their local communities has been key to making this happen.”
