Lari Don launches Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland 2014
24 June 2014
Today (Monday 23rd June) award-winning children’s author Lari Don helped launch the Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland. Run by The Reading Agency in partnership with Scotland’s libraries and Tesco Bank, the challenge involves children reading six books during the summer holidays, a time when literacy skills can dip.
Lari was at Glasgow’s Mitchell Library for an event with primary five pupils from Holy Cross Primary School, to speak about the pleasure of reading and share some of her own experiences as an author.
Each year the nation’s librarians work with The Reading Agency to create a new theme for the Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland, and this year’s edition is sure to excite. “Mythical Maze” has been created by acclaimed illustrator Sarah McIntyre.
Children are challenged to find their way around the Mythical Maze meeting some “fantastical creatures” from the world of legend and mythology, including Anansi, the Minotaur, Mermaids, Garuda and the Loch Ness Monster.
Across the summer holidays children are challenged to borrow and read six books from their local library in return for great incentives, including smelly stickers! Every child who completes the challenge will be rewarded with a certificate and medal.
Lari is no stranger to mythical and magical tales, as author of Fabled Beast Chronicles as well as being a renowned storyteller and a passionate advocate for libraries.
Tesco Bank has been working in partnership with Scotland’s libraries and The Reading Agency for four years and the programme encourages 40,000 children each year to take part.
Adele Mills, Community Investment Manager at Tesco Bank, commented,
“Reading is a fundamental life skill so we were delighted to welcome Lari, such a hugely popular author, along to entertain the pupils of Holy Cross Primary School. At Tesco Bank we strive to support the communities in which we operate, and that means continuing to help children have fun through reading during the summer break.”
Lari Don, Author, commented,
“The Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland is a fabulous initiative to get children and families into the library over the summer, and to make reading a fun part of the summer holidays. This year’s theme Mystical Maze will let dragons, monsters and fairies loose in the library, and will allow children to go on magical adventures and quests during their holidays! I’m really looking forward to launching the Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland!”
Sue Wilkinson MBE, chief executive of The Reading Agency, commented,
“It is wonderful to be launching the 2014 Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland. This fantastic programme which is developed and delivered in partnership with librarians across Scotland is designed to inspire children to keep reading during the long summer break. We know from our own research just how much fun families and children get out of taking part in the Challenge; What we hope is that everyone who takes part this summer really will find out that everything changes when we read.”
Karen Cunningham, Head of Glasgow Libraries, commented,
“The Mitchell Library has welcomed many renowned authors this year and we were delighted that Lari Don could also join us for the launch of such a worthwhile initiative. The Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland promotes reading and learning in a fun, exciting way that will undoubtedly appeal to children.”
