Local child reads record number of books for Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland!
18 August 2014
Today (Monday 18th August), six-year-old Rhona Brown, was at South Queensferry Library in Edinburgh for a special photo-call after it was revealed the local child had read over 180 books as part of the Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland, this year!
Rhona, who is in primary two at South Queensferry Primary School, has fully embraced this year’s Challenge and in doing so has now earned the equivalent of 30 medals over the six week period.
As well as a medal, children who complete the Challenge receive smelly stickers, which Rhona loved, as well as certificates. She had such a great time reading this summer she is going to carry the Challenge on!
Run by The Reading Agency in partnership with Scotland’s libraries and Tesco Bank, the challenge involves children reading six books during the summer holidays, a time when literacy skills can dip. Children receive a medal after completing six books.
Children are tasked with finding their way around the Mythical Maze meeting some “fantastical creatures” from the world of legend and mythology, including Anansi, the Minotaur, Mermaids, Garuda and the Loch Ness Monster.
Some of Rhona’s favourite books included: My Brother by Anthony Browne, Doctor Tilly by Polly Dunbar and Tiger Ways by Kes Gray. She was gifted some special signed copies of a selection of books by Anthony Browne, donated by Walker Books.
Tesco Bank has been working in partnership with Scotland’s libraries and The Reading Agency for four years and the programme encourages 40,000 children each year to take part.
Rhona Brown said,
“I loved the challenge and I’m going to keep doing all the challenges!”
Rhona’s dad (Laurie) and her mum (Carol) said,
“It’s been great to see Rhona embrace this challenge and watch her reading skills develop. We are both very proud.”
Adele Mills Community Investment Manager at Tesco Bank comments,
"It is always great to hear how enthusiastic the children are and how much fun they have in completing it. The Challenge is aimed to inject fun into reading during the summer holidays and encourage children to pick up a book. Rhona is a wonderful example of how successful the programme can be and it was lovely to meet her today at her local library. Rhona’s really set the target for the other 40,000 children who take part every year.”
Councillor Richard Lewis, Convener of Culture & Sport at the City of Edinburgh Council said,
“Edinburgh City Libraries have a great track record in increasing the number of children who complete the Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge annually, thanks to the enthusiasm of our library staff across 28 libraries and the resources produced by the Reading Agency. My warmest congratulations go to South Queensferry Library team and to Rhona on her amazing achievement.”
Nicola Tonner, South Queensferry Team Leader said,
“It’s been fantastic to see Rhona so enthusiastic about reading over the summer holidays. We’ve had over 300 children sign up for the Challenge here at South Queensferry Library and look forward to running many more reading related activities through the autumn.”
Sue Wilkinson, Chief Executive of The Reading Agency said,
“We were amazed to hear about Rhona’s incredible achievement, and hope that she continues to enjoy borrowing books and taking part in library activities throughout the year until next year’s Challenge!Children often want to read what other children like themselves have enjoyed, so it would be terrific if Rhona can recommend her favourite books to her friends back at school as she’ll probably inspire more children to get hooked into reading. I am a particular fan of Anthony Browne’s books myself so I am glad Rhona enjoys these- there’s lots of thought provoking ideas in his books and illustrations for parents and carers to enjoy as well.”
