Tesco Bank to partner major Scottish road cycling event
12 January 2015
One of the fastest growing cycling events in Scotland is to receive a major boost for 2015, with the announcement of Tesco Bank as the main new partner. In addition there will be a new route featuring what organisers describe as “some of the best road cycling terrain in the UK”.
Tesco Bank Tour O The Borders, a 75 mile road cycling sportive event, will set off from Peebles on August 9 2015, with over 2000 riders enjoying some of Scotland’s best road riding with the route closed to all cars and other traffic.
Tour O The Borders began in 2012 when just 300 riders took part, but has quickly grown into one of the biggest road cycling events on the Scottish calendar, with numbers heading towards ten times the original figure in just four years. The event organisers are all local to the ride area, and keen riders themselves, so organising everything with the riders’ experience on the day is the number one priority.
The involvement of Tesco Bank will help them achieve this through a new timed hill climb section, improved feed stations, more road signage and an event village at the event start area in Peebles. Fundraising for Tesco Bank’s selected charity partners who they have chosen to benefit from the sportive will also be taking place.
The biggest change for the 2015 ride is the new route, which heads west from the Peebles start and finish point and into some of the most spectacular roads in the Scottish Borders. The route, which takes in Stobo, Tweedsmuir and St Marys Loch includes some absolutely classic riding and amazing landscapes.
Neil Dalgleish, event organiser at Tesco Bank Tour O The Borders said,
"We are aiming to make this the best sportive ride in Scotland and we’re delighted that Tesco Bank’s support will help us add new elements which will make the ride even more enjoyable for all the riders as for many it’s their Tour de France for the day."
Adele Mills, Senior Community Investment Manager at Tesco Bank added,
"We recognise the importance of supporting the communities in which we serve. That is why we are proud to partner the Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders, helping them to achieve their aim of becoming the best sportive in Scotland. Health and wellbeing is important to all of us and this event encourages riders of all abilities to lead happier, healthier lives by getting out on their bike and seeing some beautiful parts of the Scottish Borders."
While organisers are excited about the new course and the challenge it provides, they remain focussed on the mass-participation nature of the ride. It’s a great day out with some of the best climbs in the country, but it’s by no means a race or an event for just the fittest. All kinds of cyclists can enjoy superb, traffic-free riding in the company of a big, friendly group of like-minded riders.
Preparation is always recommended for big rides like this, and event preparation suggestions along with training plans and tips for riders will be publicised throughout the run up to the event.
The event is also supported by Scottish Borders Council, Endura and Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative. Tesco Bank Tour O The Borders backs Macmillan Cancer Support. Event entry is available via the event website http://tourotheborders.com/
