River Kids announces partnership with Tesco Bank in Edinburgh

Today (1 March 2016) River Kids announced that it has been selected by Tesco Bank’s employees in Edinburgh to be their official charity partner for 2016/17. River Kids was set up ten years ago to meet the needs of West Lothian's most disadvantaged children, supporting them to reach their full potential.

Tesco Bank supports a different local children’s charity every year.  Their employees were recently asked to nominate a new charity for the coming year and the Bank received almost 150 nominations across all its offices. Colleagues were giving the opportunity to vote, with River Kids coming out top in Edinburgh.

The Bank aims to raise £35,000 through a range of initiatives to enable the charity to include children in activities they may not experience often such as taking over 1,000 children to Five Sisters Zoo and having breakfast with Santa.

Fundraising will also go towards helping families in crisis buy essential items such new cot mattresses, bedding, sterilisers and bottles for emergency care packs. The charity’s toy appeal will also be a focus of the Bank’s support.

In addition, River Kids will benefit from the Bank’s ‘Take a Day to Make a Difference’ when employees are encouraged to take time away from the business to volunteer for good causes.

Wendy Simpson, charity co-ordinator at River Kids, said:

"We were absolutely delighted to be chosen as Tesco Bank’s charity of the year for its Edinburgh offices. The fundraising will allow us to give children in West Lothian experiences that not only allow them to have fun, but provide positive experiences for the whole family, while helping to build the child’s self-esteem and confidence. We couldn’t provide the breakfast with Santa last year due to lack of funds so we can’t wait to start working with the team."

Tesco Bank community engagement manager Suzanne Laporte said:

"Our employees are passionate about supporting their local communities. Over the last five years they’ve help raise £1.55million for charities and volunteered more than 23,000 hours helping local charities, schools and community groups. They voted overwhelmingly to support River Kids as they want to support the most vulnerable children in our local area. We’ve already started planning our first fundraising event and are keen to start volunteering with the charity to provide that extra support they wouldn’t normally receive."

About River Kids

River Kids was set up ten years ago to meet the needs of West Lothian’s most disadvantaged children, supporting them to reach their full potential. The charity believes that all children have the right to play and it therefore focusses on toy appeals – without these appeals, many children would not receive any presents for their birthday or Christmas. The charity receives referrals from professionals who work with the community’s most vulnerable families.
