Tesco Bank Tour ‘O-bree’ The Borders launches for 2016!
17 February 2016
Today (Wednesday 17th February 2016) British cycling legend Graeme Obree was unveiled as the 2016 Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders event ambassador.
Nicknamed The Flying Scotsman during his professional career, Graeme twice broke the world hour record, in July 1993 and April 1994, and was the 4000m individual pursuit world champion in 1993 and 1995. He is known for his unusual riding positions and for the Old Faithful bicycle he built which included parts from a washing machine. His new film “Battle Mountain, Graeme Obree’s Story” will appear in cinemas from 21 March 2016.
Graeme, who will be taking part in the 120km sportive in August, was also joined by representatives from the British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK. Event organisers are encouraging any monies raised to be donated to the National Charity Partnership – a three year partnership between Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation and Tesco. As well as funding the vital and ongoing work of both charities, the National Charity Partnership will deliver projects nationwide aimed at inspiring millions of people to eat better and be more active, to help reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease – both of which are largely preventable through a healthy lifestyle.
The increasingly popular Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders is expected to attract up to 3,000 pre-registered riders who can select either the 88km or 120km close road route. Starting and finishing in Peebles both routes wind through the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders passing some of the most beautiful and unspoilt landscape in the whole of the UK.
Graeme Obree, the Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders Ambassador said;
"I’m delighted to be the event ambassador for the Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders this year. It’s always a treat for cyclists to have the roads to themselves and the route looks really enjoyable through some of Scotland’s most beautiful countryside. I can’t wait to get on my bike and experience it on the 7th August and I’d encourage others to take on the challenge and join me."
"I’m also passionate about encouraging people of all ages to lead a healthy and active lifestyle which is good for both mental and physical health. Being fit and healthy can help to prevent the onset of conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease."
Nicole Spalding, Fundraising Manager for the National Charity Partnership in Scotland added;
"In Scotland today, around 286,000 people are living with Type 2 diabetes, with a further 973,000 at increased risk of the condition. In addition to sight loss and nerve damage, diabetes can increase the risk of heart and circulatory disease. There are an estimated 710,000 people living with heart and circulatory disease in Scotland today, with many more at serious risk. A healthy lifestyle can help to reduce people’s risk of these conditions."
“We are delighted that the National Charity Partnership has been chosen to benefit from this hugely popular fundraising event. As well as funding the vital and ongoing work of both Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation, the money raised will also fund Partnership projects such as Let’s Do This – a campaign designed to inspire millions of people to set achievable lifestyle goals to boost their health and wellbeing and help reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease.”
Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders Event Director Neil Dalgleish said;
"We’re absolutely thrilled to have Graeme on board to help us promote and add profile to the Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders. Our riders are going to really enjoy the opportunity to cycle alongside such a big name in cycling."
“With mile after mile of spectacular scenery, some of the best closed road cycling terrain in Scotland, and the inclusion of the famous Talla Wall climb, our route is truly a classic. It’s a fantastic day out on the bike and I know Graeme is going to really enjoy it!”
Adele Mills, Senior Community Investment Manager, Tesco Bank said;
"We are really pleased to have the support of Graeme Obree as our event ambassador. Graeme’s profile within cycling and beyond will help us further build the profile and our association with this popular event. Graeme’s well documented views on the benefits from leading an active and healthy lifestyle fit really well with our commitment to encouraging healthy choices for our employees and customers."
As well as Tesco Bank, the event is also supported by global cycling brands Shimano, Endura, Cannondale, The Edinburgh Bike Coop, Scottish Cycling and Scottish Borders Council. Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders backs British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK.
