Tesco launches e-gift card for volunteers helping the vulnerable
14 May 2020
Tesco has launched a dedicated Volunteer e-Gift Card giving elderly, vulnerable and self-isolating customers a safe and contact-free way to allow others to pay for and collect their weekly shop.
Customers unable to get to the shops themselves can buy a Volunteer e-Gift Card, available from £5 up to £150, online at www.tescogiftcards.com. This can then be emailed directly to friends, family or volunteers to purchase essential groceries in Tesco stores on their behalf. Customers can check the balance of their e-gift card over the phone to keep track of their grocery spending and will receive a copy of their e-gift card allowing them to keep hold of any remaining balance once the shopping has been delivered.
To support the most vulnerable customers, Tesco is offering priority access to online grocery slots, and has more than doubled the number of slots available since the start of the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis to more than 1.25 million each week. However, for vulnerable customers who have a support network of people that can shop on their behalf, the e-gift card provides a simple, safe and contact-free method to send funds without having to take out cash or share bank card details.
The e-gift card also creates a mechanism for the army of volunteers across the country, who have pledged to step in and help those in need with tasks such as shopping. As part of a £30m package of support for local communities tackling COVID-19, Tesco has donated £2m to the British Red Cross, helping them to continue vital work as part of a community-based approach which includes a new national support line and doorstep support to those self-isolating. The British Red Cross is a volunteer-led organisation and their tens of thousands of volunteers are supporting people facing the challenges of COVID-19 through the continuation of core services as well as establishing new ones to meet emerging needs.
Tesco Bank Chief Executive, Gerry Mallon, said:
“We are continuously looking for new ways to support communities during these challenging times and the Volunteer e-Gift Card forms part of our commitment to help make life a little easier for our vulnerable customers.
"Many people are currently relying on others and it’s incredible to see so many people volunteering their time to help. Local communities have rallied around those unable to leave their house and our e-gift card helps make it easier for volunteers to get essential groceries to them in their time of need.”
British Red Cross Crisis Response Manager, Jon Pewtner, said:
“We’ve been working with Tesco for over a decade supporting people facing crisis in the UK. As part of our COVID-19 partnership, we are collaborating to make sure food reaches those in urgent need immediately. These e-gift cards are a welcome example of Tesco’s support for vulnerable customers and another easy option for volunteers like ours when they are doing shopping on behalf of others.”
The introduction of the e-gift card is the latest in a series of measures that Tesco has put in place to support its customers and local communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information on Tesco’s response to COVID-19, visit www.tescoplc.com/covid-19.
