Tesco Bank Reveals Britain's Most Popular Pooches
25 August 2021
Labradors are Britain’s most popular pure dog breed, according to online research commissioned by Tesco Bank. The survey, which also found the most popular dog names by breed, has been revealed ahead of International Dog Day on 26th August 2021.
- The most popular pure breed of dog in England, and Great Britain overall, is the Labrador (10%)
- In Scotland, Jack Russells and border collies are the top dogs (10%), and in Wales, Staffordshire Bull Terriers are the most popular pooches (12%)
- 35% of Brits with a dog spend £50 or more on dog grooming per year
- The most expensive dog breed by average treatment cost is Great Dane (£731), followed by Rottweiler (£588) and Labrador (£566)
- The top male dog name is Max, and the top female dog name is Bella.
According to the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association, 3.2 million households in Britain have acquired a pet since the start of the pandemic and there are now more than 12 million dogs in the UK2. From Cockapoos to Labradoodles and Cavachons to French Bulldogs, Brits have welcomed a wide variety of dog breeds into their homes. However, a recent survey by Tesco Bank revealed that the Labrador is man’s best friend in first place as Britain’s number one dog breed.
The survey of British adults also revealed that classic canine names like Max and Bella top the list of the most popular British dog names, while Labradors are most likely to be called Millie.
Andrew McMillan, Insurance spokesperson, Tesco Bank said:
“We are a nation of dog lovers, but our furry friends come in all shapes and sizes. Different breeds have different needs, so it’s important to give them the protection they deserve.
“Pet insurance offers cover against a range of illnesses and events and it’s important that customers research and choose the policy that is right for them and their pet.”
